War of the Worlds is 70

I was just recently reminded that the original War of the Worlds film, produced by George Pal, was released 70 years ago this year.

This is my 1/8th scale Martian figure from Pegasus. I built and painted this a while ago.

The model represents the Martian that encounters Gene Barry and Ann Robinson when they were all in the farmhouse. The Martian wound up being just as scared of Ann as she was of it.

It's a great kit of a classic film character. Happy 70th birthday, Martian!

Explorer From Another World

It’s Friday night during the summer in Beutter county, an idyllic farming community in Indiana, and the good folks are settling in for what should be another humdinger of an evening. Until their plans are shattered by the arrival of an Explorer From Another World! Batman: The Return of the Caped Crusaders -- a review

Holy animation,, Batman! Batman: The Return of the Caped Crusaders is a loving tribute to the 1960s TV series that manages to feel like the second 1960s-era Batman movie, thanks to the voice-casting of original Batman and Robin stars Adam West and Burt Ward, along with Julie Newmar, who reprises her role as Catwoman. Taking place in the same time period as the series, the film is filled with the social mores of the time, such as having Catwoman demurely step to the side whenever Batman and Robin battle the villainous henchmen (complete with the customary BIFF! BAM! and POW! word balloons the original series always flashed during the fight scenes). Catwoman is a part of a fearsome foursome of rogues that includes the Joker, Penguin and the Riddler as they set out to work together to wreak havoc on Gotham City. Cloverfield 1, 2, & 3 -- a review

Netflix gave us a special surprise right after the Superbowl ended when they premiered Cloverfield: Paradox , the third in the SF/Horror anthology film series that got started ten years ago with the original Cloverfield . I’ve recently read that there’s now a fourth Cloverfield film on the horizon. Can’t wait to see that one, but lets take a look at the first three: Cloverfield: Paradox takes place aboard a space station in the somewhat distant future. Humanity is on the brink of an all-out war over the last dwindling reserves of oil, with people waiting on lines that stretch for blocks just to gas up (much like the gas lines of the 1970s). The Cloverfield space station is testing a gizmo that will supposedly end the energy crisis, but once they get it running, the device transports the station to another universe, where they find the Earth is missing and an extra crew member (played by Elizabeth Debicki) in the wall of their space station.
