Away Team Member


I bought this resin figure of a Starfleet alien from a Chiller convention about twenty--twenty five--years ago. And ever since then he's been knocking around unpainted...until now. 


No assembly was required on the figure itself. I just had to paint him. Since he was clad in the standard uniform of Starfleet in the Next Generation era, I decided to make him an engineer. 


So I gave him the gold shirt and trimmings of the Starfleet engineer of that era.


I also gave him a blue skin tone, setting down a darker blue base that was highlighted with a lighter blue dry-brushing. I painted his eyes red, which tend to pop nicely in these pictures.


The base is one of those wooden jobs that you get in the hobby store for really cheap. I covered it with a layer of Sculpt-A-Mold, then painted it to look like the surface of an alien planet. The plant was cut from a branch of a plastic aquarium plant and painted purple with yellow for that 'alien plant' look. Working on this took a couple of weeks, and that wound up being an oasis of sanity for me during these crazy times.

Batman: The Return of the Caped Crusaders -- a review

Holy animation,, Batman! Batman: The Return of the Caped Crusaders is a loving tribute to the 1960s TV series that manages to feel like the second 1960s-era Batman movie, thanks to the voice-casting of original Batman and Robin stars Adam West and Burt Ward, along with Julie Newmar, who reprises her role as Catwoman. Taking place in the same time period as the series, the film is filled with the social mores of the time, such as having Catwoman demurely step to the side whenever Batman and Robin battle the villainous henchmen (complete with the customary BIFF! BAM! and POW! word balloons the original series always flashed during the fight scenes). Catwoman is a part of a fearsome foursome of rogues that includes the Joker, Penguin and the Riddler as they set out to work together to wreak havoc on Gotham City. Cloverfield 1, 2, & 3 -- a review

Netflix gave us a special surprise right after the Superbowl ended when they premiered Cloverfield: Paradox , the third in the SF/Horror anthology film series that got started ten years ago with the original Cloverfield . I’ve recently read that there’s now a fourth Cloverfield film on the horizon. Can’t wait to see that one, but lets take a look at the first three: Cloverfield: Paradox takes place aboard a space station in the somewhat distant future. Humanity is on the brink of an all-out war over the last dwindling reserves of oil, with people waiting on lines that stretch for blocks just to gas up (much like the gas lines of the 1970s). The Cloverfield space station is testing a gizmo that will supposedly end the energy crisis, but once they get it running, the device transports the station to another universe, where they find the Earth is missing and an extra crew member (played by Elizabeth Debicki) in the wall of their space station.
